He's Crazy About That Computer Game

Always taunting him with would be impossibilities; solitaire is his electronic game of choice. The program was already installed as a part of the entire computer package. No other game can deter his loyalty to the ever-challenging virtual deck of cards. Solitaire is my favorite game, too, though I never play it. Even though I sometimes feel like strapping a feedbag around his neck when it’s time to eat, if he’s in his cave he is a good boy. Remember John Gray’s “Men Are From Mars, Women are from Venus” book? If it weren’t for the solitaire, my gamer husband would be shiftless, and in the constant motion of a stormy sea brought on by nervous energy. He would be getting worn out without knowing it. With solitaire to slow him down, he runs two chains of thought. One is mindless impulse, and the other is cooking up strategies like how to pay the bills, and when. Making decisions that need to be made. Sometimes he lets one part of his mind wander off in daydreams, while he is yet tethered to the pecking and choosing offered by the keyboard. I have free reign of the house like I used to before he retired. Now his big body doesn’t get in the way. He’s mesmerized, and pasted into his game. Every once in while, he gets up when the computer screen is bounding with buoyant virtual cards that look like they might fly off the screen any moment. The game finally let him win. That’s when he’s ready to be sociable, acknowledge other people, and possibly have a conversation. I give thanks for the blessing of computer solitaire, and the peaceful moments it brings.
