Dating Horror Story

By Carol Gibson

A Dating Horror Story

The heartbreaks and disappointments of the dating world have still not left me. Neither did the memory of the following dating horror story. It all started with a guy I had just met and his invitation to go dancing in a neighboring city at a glitzy, new nightclub.

Remembering this so-called date with an English professor, who turned out to be such a dud, is always good for a chuckle, though.

Our date began to look iffy when, along the way, he asked if I didn’t mind if he would pick up a friend.  Well, the friend turned out to be a female who he proceeded to dance with, exclusively, for the whole evening. They both had already ignored me for the entire drive there.

That was on a Friday night.

After surviving a whole evening of sitting in this guy’s car, I had returned home feeling quite depressed.

The down-in-the-dumps mindset was that I might as well give up on ever finding anyone.  That's when I resolved that I need to start learning to do things all by my lonesome self. At this, I laid out the newspaper movie section determined to catch a movie and have an enjoyable date with myself.

Two pages of cinema houses offered a huge selection of Saturday matinees. It didn't take long to pick out a movie that sounded good. After drumming up some courage, I got in the car went there all by my lonesome self.

Going through this ritual definitely helped me get into a better mood.  However, it was not because of the movie's wonderful plot, or superb acting, or luscious background.

What did bring my spirits up was when a couple filed into the row ahead of me and sat down. The man took the seat exactly lined up in front of mine.  Late for the movie, whispering and interrupting everyone's viewing, here sat my date from Friday night and his girlfriend from the night before!

"Are they doing this on purpose?" I wondered almost aloud.  After a few minutes, I realized they were oblivious to me being there, and decided it was just another one of those “why-do-things-like-this-always-happen-to-me” events.

I quickly became perturbed at the sight of the backs of their heads. It was like a surrealistic flashback of the previous evening. And it prompted a devilish thought to begin whirring around in the front of my head. I think I may have even started drooling a little bit, as these devilish thoughts were sounding quite delicious.

I couldn't resist the titillating idea of what a delightful retribution I could have just now, and just like that, all a sudden, found my leg stretched out and my foot gouging the bottom of his seat.  When he turned around and saw that it was I, he also saw a gnarled face twisted into the meanest look I could muster up.

In an instant, both of them were tripping over a half a row of people's knees making their desperate escape.  I heard him say, "She's stalking us, " as they filed out and left the theater.  I could hardly contain the laughter.  Though it had to be a silent giggle, it lasted for days for days on end.

As a matter of fact, it has lasted for the better part of a lifetime. Through the laughter, I learned that I could indeed have fun by my little old self.  I also began to believe in instant karma that day. This weekend from the past will always be remembered. It’s a dating horror story that turned into one of the funniest memories of a lifetime.

This intel is great. When it happened I'm sure that you didn't see the lighter side. Thank you for sharing the fact that there is usually some good in most things we encounter.
Good luck.

I've never quite figured out why people go to the movies with company. All you do there (supposedly) is sit in darkness, ignore each other and pay attention to the screen.
