Callanetics - Exercise that shows results

By Carol Gibson

A while back I was watching “Good Morning America,” and saw an interesting looking woman being interviewed, so I watched it. Callan Pinckney revealed that she was fifty years old, but looked like she was still in her thirties.

Impressed, I thought if I could look like that when I’m fifty, that would be great! More than this, I liked her philosophy that people need to be gentler with their bodies.

I had been going to a spa and following the high impact aerobics, and always returning home with sore muscles that lasted for the whole next day. The “no pain – no gain” rule of thumb wasn’t working at all.

After “Good Morning America”, I jumped in the car making a beeline for Barnes and Noble bookstore.

With book in hand, I learned so much more.

Pinckney offered advice about back problems. As a matter of fact, her experiences with back problems lead her to design these exercises for straightening and strengthening the back muscles.

As a young girl, Callan learned ballet, and had always loved it. Part of the aspiration of her system was to develop a graceful look to the legs and derriere.

Between all of the aspects of the Callanetics system, I found it really easy to follow her regimen. Though she has a lot of repetitions, she advises taking it slow, and do what you can.

Only an inch or so is involved in any of the movements, but they aren’t really easy. She tells her students to take their time, and let the strength develop naturally.

Her book is available in hardback or soft cover, and is well illustrated.

She’s chosen models of all sorts of body types, encouraging all to be accepting of what they were born with. Moreover, she has models who are in their eighties, and still able to follow the regimen. Her message is that beauty is timeless.

The only equipment involved is a bar to hang from. This is another exercise that takes time to develop. As a warm up, hanging from the bar decompresses the spinal cord.

In her studio, she’s installed rails that are used for ballet practice, but she says you can use the edge of a table, or a chair instead.

All in all, she eliminates any excuses a person might have for not doing these exercises.

Included in the pages of the book are in-progress results. These are really impressive. She also has a sense of humor. An example is one of the titles – “Gone with the gush.”

I feel like I know Callan Pinckney, although we’ve never met. These low impact exercises have definitely had a high impact on my life.

Congratulations on finding something that worked for you - many people struggle for years to do just that. And thank you for sharing the expertly presented review. But how do the results compare to the high-impact aerobics? Do you feel more toned or just less sore?

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

I would say yes, the stretching helps keep a nice smooth line. I had huge looking calves with the the aerobics.

Thank you for sharing this very informative intel,Carol.
There is so much that we can do within the comfort of our homes to keep ourselves healthy.
Keep up the good work.
