An Old, Ugly Sweater
By Carol Gibson
Winter is coming. Time to get out the ugly, old sweater. In its defense, though, it still keeps me warm better than anything other singular article in the closet. More than this, there’s a story to this sweater. Come to think of that, the old thing has quite a lot of character. The old ugly sweater history: In the first place, it was given to me. It belonged to my first boyfriend, and his previous girlfriend had given it to him.( It was ugly when it was newer, too.) I found more history on the old sweater when I flew from the US to Europe, which entailed a layover in Iceland. That's where I saw an identical ugly sweater in the gift shop. Any sweater that was good enough to be made in Iceland, was good enough for me. It’s made out of extra thick wool, and it’s woven in big sections. A big collar drapes all the way to the end of my shoulders. It comes in handy when the wind blows, and ears need protected. O.K. Ready for the clincher? You may be wondering by now, just exactly how old is this sweater? I’m not exactly sure, because I don’t know when my ex boyfriend’s girlfriend gave it to him. I do know, and am almost embarrassed to say that I’ve owned it for forty some years. It’s got some weak places in the elbows. The seam is coming apart at the cuff, but again, it keeps me warmer than anything else. I have another item that’s even older than that. I’m not sure how old the fabric that was in my Grandmother’s trunk was when I inherited it. I liked the glow and the weave the minute I saw it. So I sewed a pair of culottes from this beautiful wool gabardine fabric. The good-lookingness of it, always made me feel chipper when I wore those culottes. Now out of style, they merely take up space in the closet. I can’t bear to part with them. More than this however, they hardly show any aging. They have become a source of amazement, year after year. While I’m thinking of old things, other than myself, I just had to ponder one day as I stood looking into the closet. What if everything we wear would last this long? How much money could be saved if no one really cared about fashion? All we would need would be about seven different outfits. To never have to replace them would save wheelbarrows full of money. The money we spent on being fashionable would be in an interest bearing financial account instead. It would be earning for you at this very moment, as you read this article – right?
