A Serendipitous Moment and a Click of the Remote Control

By Carol Gibson of Carallelworld

A serendipitous moment happened within the dramatic television series Law and Order. Vincent D’Onofrio is one of my favorite characters on this epoch criminal investigation series. His spontaneous and eccentric characterizations fit so perfectly into a clip that I caught by coincidence one afternoon. He profiled a dyslexic suspect in this television episode. But this article isn't really about Vincent. It's not so much about Law and Order, either, really.

Dyslexic folks get sited for not being able to concentrate very well. But often, the sensory observations of dyslexia lead to a broad based way of thinking and problem solving. In an unusually brilliant portrayal, Detective Robert Goren’s analytical, penetrating mind is able to solve the mystery of two partners in denial of their crime.

I tuned into to the show serendipitously during the climactic moments when D’Onofrio was eliciting a confession from a dyslexic murder suspect. Briefly, the story plot was about two partners in crime where one double crosses the other in an attempted conceptual theft.

Evidently with no honor amongst thieves, D’Onofrio is able to divide and conquer. In this clip, at the very end of the show, I caught a glimmer of understanding about my own life long condition that has in many ways kept me out of the mainstream of society. I couldn’t help but feel that analyzing the dyslexia had a true, personal significance for actor D'Onofrio, as well.

In his role as Detective Goren, he analyzes one of two thief partners who had engineered an impressive invention. Addressing this partner, Goren, with his usual acute perception, observes the man’s right brain sense of intellect. The detective describes the man’s right brained thinking as three dimensional, while Goren’s own personal brand of genius sleuths out the workings of the suspect’s mind.

Here in this coincidental happening of flicking the power button on the television remote, I perceive the quality that has kept the Law and Order series as the longest running crime show series in the history of television. In that last five minutes alone, a full circle, serendipitous, culmination quickly led into a most awesome epiphany.

In the storyline, the female partner in crime had evidently coaxed the dyslexic man into committing a murder. She would then execute her wily plan to steal her dyslexic partner’s invention by getting him imprisoned through framing him exclusively for the crime.

I watched the reaction of the dyslexic character, and saw what had become of his true-to-life portrayal. I sympathized because this is what could have easily become of my fate. I had developed a bad attitude toward society because of being misunderstood. I found myself in near miss brushes with the law, and suddenly felt very lucky to be who I grew up to be.

I had never really thought about this before the serendipitous click of the remote that day. Clicking at this coincidentally perfect moment was a right brain way of stumbling into this television show climax. In turn, through this kind of intuitive hit, I serendipitously found myself experiencing a most wonderful epiphany.

The drama of Law and Order is an art form that truly mimics real life. Concepts imparted to the viewer make this television viewing a rich and enlightening experience - indirectly serendipitous, too.
